Cops digging deep into drugs in jail

Days after the discovery of illegal drugs inside the facility of the Ma-a City Jail last weekend, Davao City Police Office (DCPO) director Sr. Supt. Alexander Tagum cannot determine, as of the moment, the intensity of the drug trade inside the city jail.

Tagum, on Thursday, said that they had submitted all reports to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), for investigation.

“Whatever developments in the future (resulting from the report), we will adjust and act on the given information that would reach under our unit,” he said during the iSpeak media forum at the City Hall of Davao.

DCPO, on Saturday, conducted a surprise greyhound search inside the city jail, wherein law enforcers recovered two plastic sachets of white crystalline substances believed to be shabu valued at P160,000, drug paraphernalia, and deadly weapons.

Four inmates were killed after allegedly attacking law enforcers who were conducted the search.

Four jail guards are now also being investigated, for allowing the contraband of illegal drugs to be brought inside the city jail.

Tagum said that 12 inmates were found positive of illegal drugs in the drug inspection on Monday.

The Ma-a City Jail has a total 3,000 inmates, while its allowable capacity is only good for 300 persons.

Currently, the “no visit rule” is being implemented, while BJMP is working on establishing a receiving area for inmates to communicate with families without necessarily going through physical contact.

The DCPO head also said that they will intensify the drug testing, not only the inmates and the jail wardens, but also on the whole police organization.

“This will serve as a deterrent to the PNP (Philippine National Police) marker, from taking illegal drugs,” Tagum said.
