Seasoned politicians as well as neophyte aspirants were among those who filed their Certificates of Candidacy (CoC) during the first day of CoC filing for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) at the regional office of the Commission on Elections (Comelec 11) on Monday.

The grounds of Comelec 11 inside Magsaysay Park was teeming with aspirants and supporters who showed support for their candidates in the first day of filing.

Among the neophyte candidates with a known political pedigree who filed her CoC is Mary Claire I. Abayon who is running for barangay kagawad. She is the daughter of Barangay Captain Edgar Ibuyan Sr. of Barangay 5-A. Abayon was joined by her father who filed for reelection.

In an interview with the Davao media, Abayon said she decided to run to help his father in implementing projects for the welfare and development of the people of Brgy. 5-A.

“Being a public servant naa na gyud siya sa amoa since 1997 kay the first time na naging barangay captain akong father I was with him ug ako ang nag design sa barangay hall namo. It’s Bankerohan that had the first three-story building,” she said.

She is eyeing to create inclusive programs not only for women empowerment but also for the youth of her barangay such as skills development and sports.

Another incumbent barangay chieftain, Alimodin “Wating” Usman of Brgy. 23-C, also filed his candidacy to seek reelection for his third and final term.

“Unta wala tay kalaban para walay labad sa ulo,” he said in an interview.

Usman said his programs will still be focusing on maintaining the peace and order of his barangay.

“Ang pag-maintain sa peace and order situation sa barangay labi na sa atong kaigsoonan na mga Muslim kay ang Brgy. 23 dili lalim mahimong kapitan dinha. Nasayod mo kaniadto sa kalabad sa ulo kay naa dinha ang droga. Karon dili pud nato maingon na nasulbad na pero na-minimize kini sa akong tan-aw. Ang pagkandidato in Islam wala man mag-ingon na ikaw gyud mag volunteer nga magkadidato, naa gyud musugo nimo nga tawo. Pinaagi sa tawo nga gisugo ta nga padaganon, ug nanginahanglan pa sa imong panerbisyo,” he said.

Meanwhile, lawyer Rene Alexis Villarente filed his candidacy for barangay captain of one of the most flood-affected areas in the city, the Talomo District. Villarente, who ran as barangay captain in the same barangay during the last BSKE but lost, is anchoring his programs through church-led principles.

“Ug ang solution na ihatag dili lang solution na simple apan kanang gi-eskwelahan gyud. Dinha nako gi-anchor ang akong programa isip lawyer na mu-participate sa BSKE,” he said.
