Denice Zamboanga leans on familiar faces in training vs. Stamp Fairtex

Filipina MMA fighter Denice Zamboanga. Handout/ONE Championship

As Denice Zamboanga prepares for the biggest fight of her mixed martial arts career, she has turned to familiar faces to help her in training camp.

Her brother Drex Zamboanga and fiance Fritz Biagtan have done their part in pushing Zamboanga to her limits as they train ahead of her monumental clash against Stamp Fairtex at ONE 167: Stamp vs. Zamboanga at the Impact Arena in Bangkok on June 8.

“Of course, sobrang saya ko lalo na kay kuya siya talaga ang kasama ko simula nung nag-start ako,” she said of her training camp at T-Rex MMA Gym.

“Kasama ko siya for this fight, lalo din si Fritz kasi siya yung nagiging strength and conditioning coach ko for this fight. Happy ako na yung dalawang taong importante sa akin is kasama ko.”

Having the two on her corner is vital for Zamboanga in her quest to win the ONE Women’s Atomweight MMA World Champion, as she knows that she needs all the help she can get as she braces for the threat of Stamp who has been battle-tested and won six of her last seven fights.

From grappling to striking, Zamboanga admits that Stamp has really improved tenfold from the last time they trained at Fairtex Gym.

“Halos lahat ng nakalaban niya is grapplers like si Alyona [Rassohyna], Jihin [Radzuan], so she’s really focusing on her takedown defense and her Jiu-jitsu game and yun din ang fino-focus niya on our matchup. But her Muay Thai is also improving dahil kita sa fights niya. I think she improved a lot when it comes to both,” she said.

Understanding that she’s coming in as an underdog, Zamboanga is opting to keep her cards close to her chest as she wants to spring a surprise and show that she, too, has improved immensely.

“Sa tingin ko makikita niyo na lang sa fight namin yung mga improvements ko,” she stated. “Pero sobrang dami kong in-improve ngayon lalo na sobrang tagal kong naghintay for this opportunity kaya we’ll do it all on June 8.”

\Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte led the commemoration of the 82nd Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) at the Veterans Memorial Monument in Davao City on Tuesday.

The mayor emphasized that this year’s observance must be used to instill the virtues of nationalism and patriotism in the younger generation.

“Let us save a future worthy of the sacrifices made by the Filipino heroes of World War II,” the mayor said in his message.

He urged the public to remember today the sacrifices of the fallen heroes and war veterans who displayed great valor and patriotism throughout the second World War.

“Ngayong Araw ng Kagitingan, parangalan natin ang ating mga beterano. Let us honor and thank them for it is upon their sacrifices that we can enjoy our freedom today. Let their courage, their stories, and the lives that they lived be the foundation upon which we hold our independence, our constitution, and our right to create a better future today. We may no longer be enslaved by the shackles of foreign invaders but we are all still in the battle against apathy, indifference, and forgetfulness,” Duterte said.

The mayor cited the fall of the Bataan Peninsula 82 years ago and the Bataan Death March, which was the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war (POW).

“So more than 16,000 succumb to the exhaustion, starvation, and abuse. Bataan may be miles away from us here in Mindanao but the significance of the various battles of World War II and the horrors that they experienced must remain in our collective consciousness,” Duterte said.

The ceremony was attended by the the officials and employees of the city government of Davao, military, police personnel, war veterans, and their families.

This year’s commemoration carries the theme “Pagpaparangal sa Kagitingan ng mga Beterano: Saligan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino.”

Meanwhile, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte is one with fellow Filipino people in paying tribute to the veterans for their unforgivable sacrifice for the freedom that Filipinos enjoy today.

“Sila ay natatanging halimbawa ng tapang at pagmamahal sa bayan. Ang kanilang hangarin na ipagtanggol ang dangal at integridad ng ating bansa sa panahon ng digmaan ay inspirasyon na dapat nating tularan at alagaan. Kaya’t patuloy nating isapuso at tutukan ang mga aral ng ating kasaysayan,” she said.

She said the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education aims to teach and make every Filipino youth understand the value of history and the heroes who risked their lives.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Joji Ilagan-Bian, chairperson of Joji Ilagan International Schools, and Anthony Sales, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology 11 (DOST 11), on Monday ushered in the commitment of both parties to bolster the Halal industry in the Davao Region.

The MOU signing, which was held at the ICHEF Restaurant in Davao City, was witnessed by Nicole Hao Bian-Ledesma, chief operating officer of Joji Ilagan International Schools, and Mirasol Domingo, provincial director/assistant regional director of the technical support services division of DOST 11.

DOST is implementing the DOST Halal S and T Program in support of the national goal of the Halal program in recognizing the significant role of exports in the national economic development, while JIIS owns the Institute of International Culinary and Hospitality Entrepreneurship (ICHEF), which has a certified Halal kitchen that provides an opportunity for entrepreneurs to engage in Halal business.

Among the goals of the partnership include providing Halal-compliant tourism-related products and services to meet customer delight; developing and implementing Halal-compliant and effective systems, processes, and protocols in support of the Halal tourism industry; and developing and enhancing human resources on Halal science, technology, and innovation for the Halal tourism industry.

The parties aim to carry out scientific and technological cooperation through joint research and development, conduct joint training and specialized training courses, and promotion of collaboration.

The parties will also execute modes of cooperation in the fields of Halal research and development, human resource development, Halal standards, and Halal verification and testing.

Sales reiterated the commitment of DOST being the program leader of the system-wide DOST Halal S and T program.

“Science Technology and Innovation (STI) initiatives are aligned to make Philippine Halal products more competitive through research and development, quality assurance measures, value-adding mechanisms, and human resource development,” Sales said.

“We reaffirmed our commitment in our advocacy to also contribute to making Mindanao a Halal center or a Halal hub for the Philippines,” Ledesma said.

Bian said Halal is a big contributor not only to economic development but also to regional development and countryside development providing opportunities to micro, small, or even large companies.

“I want JIB to be very active in Halal. Since we are very strong in academe already and very strong on educational partnerships I said why not put up a Halal kitchen? It was hard at the start because there were many challenges that we needed to hurdle plus the Covid. But finally, we were able to do it,” she said.

In 2022, ICHEF achieved significant milestones by obtaining certificates for “Catering” from PRIME Certification and Inspection Asia Pacific Inc.

These certifications ensure compliance with Halal standards, the International Code of Practice-General of Food Hygiene, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards.

PAGASA: El Niño begins to weaken

Due to long drought and without rain, the lands are parched. Photo by Henrylito D. Tacio

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is seeing the weakening of the El Niño phenomenon, which has so far brought below normal rainfall in the region.

“Ang El Niño sa karon nag-weakan na, hinay-hinay na siya nag-weaken,” said Lolita Vinalay, the chief meteorological officer of PAGASA Davao Station.

(El Niño is currently weakening; it is slowly weakening.)

Vinalay said they saw the weakening of El Niño from March and will continue to April and May, where it will lead to neutral conditions that will develop into La Niña, which is characterized by above-normal rainfall conditions.

“Then mu-neutral condition ta after mag dissipate ang El Niño mupadulong na pud sa panahon na mo-occur ang La Niña,” Vinalay said.

(It will go into a neutral condition, and after El Niño dissipates, it will lead to a condition where La Niña will occur.)

She said that at present, there is a 60 percent chance of La Niña developing. “June, July, and August, it will start developing into La Niña,” Vinalay said.

The PAGASA meteorologist added that there are criteria to be met before they can declare the presence of La Niña.

Vinalay said the weakening of El Niño was due to the lowering of sea temperatures.

“Before it reached 2 point something (degree Celsius) of the surface temperature from the normal, it was high; now naghinay-hinay na siya kababa (it is slowly decreasing),” Vinalay said.

She said the surface temperature difference from normal is now 1 point something (degree Celsius).

“Muhinay na siya balik sa iyang normal temperature sa dagat unya kung magdevelop napud ang La Niña muhinay-hinay na pud siya ug cool, dili na siya normal na cool,” Vinalay said.

(The normal temperature of the sea will slowly go back to normal, and then it will slowly become cooler as La Niña develops, which is not normal cooling.)

El Niño requires a threshold value of 0.5 degree Celsius increase in sea surface normal temperature. La Niña requires a threshold value of -0.5 degree Celsius decrease in sea surface normal temperature.

She said if El Niño weakens and eventually disappears, regions with drought conditions will experience normal rainfall.

Vinalay added that a Low Pressure Area has been seen outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility, and the trough of the LPA may bring rain in the coming days. (RGA/PIA Davao)

The DOLE downloaded the fund to the province and will be facilitated by the province’s Public Employment Service Office and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office for distribution.

Suspected shabu worth P34M seized in Lanao del Sur town

Five kilos of suspected shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) worth P34 million were seized by joint operatives during a buy-bust operation Monday afternoon, April 8, in Malabang, Lanao del Sur in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Gil Cesario Castro, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) – BARMM, said the huge volume of illegal drugs was seized in Barangay Matalin from a high-value drug suspect.

In December 2019, authorities also apprehended five kilos of shabu worth P34 million in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, the PDEA said on its website. Three high-value drug suspects were arrested by the multi-agency operating team.

In the latest operation, authorities arrested Zacaria Kaju Nanjang, a resident of Bagua 2, Cotabato City, Castro said.

“This is an Intelligence-based operation. After this, we will go after the supply chain of illegal drugs. We have to dig deeper the persons of interests behind this narco(tics) trade,” he said.

Castro said that PDEA-BARMM agents have been monitoring the suspect’s movement for several weeks amid information that he is in possession of a huge volume of shabu.

The suspect bit the offer of a PDEA agent poseur-buyer to sell him a kilo of shabu during the entrapment operation.

After he was arrested and his car searched, more shabu, which were packed in Chinese tea bags, was found hidden in the suspect’s vehicle, Castro said.

Based on the initial information of PDEA-BARMM, the suspected shabu seized from the suspect bore a similar trademark from previous buy-bust operations in the area, where Chinese tea bags were used as packaging materials, an indication it could have been produced outside the country.

“We have a lead. We continue to profile it and conduct backtracking investigation. Soon we will know who are the players behind it,” Castro said.

Castro said the operation would not be successful without the participation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Bureau of Investigation, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group, and the Police Regional Office – BARMM.

Brig. Gen. Prexy Tanggawohn, newly installed BARMM police director, also commended the various government agencies involved in the big drug bust.

He said that authorities are still validating claims that the seized illegal drugs would be used to fund candidates in the May 2025 elections. (Ferdinandh B. Cabrera / MindaNews)
