Our good friend and former Davao City Tourism chief Wowie Huang-Teves, who just turned another leaf (Happy Birthday Wowie!) posted on her FB about David James Wee Teves.
This young Dabawenyo was first runner-up in the 11-12 years old category of the 2023 IMG Academy Junior World Qualifier last March 24 to 26 at the Eagle Ridge and Country Club.
He will advance to the next stage, the World Championships, on July 10 to 12 at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California.
In his Instagram post, David James said it was his first time pushing his own golf bag for 18 holes and survived the rounds that lasted seven hours. He thanked the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines for organizing the event that gave him the opportunity to see old friends and create new ones.
The world championships will be participated in by the best junior golfers from 56 countries, A to Z, from America Samoa to Zambia.
I know that there is an ongoing DAVRAA Meet in Tagum City, and I was just wondering if the organizing Department of Education (DepEd) officials have thought of including junior golf in the sports program. After the City Meets, follows the DAVRAA Regionals and eventually the Palarong Pambansa.
I just thought that probably it is high time for the DepEd and the LGUs to focus their sports development interest also in golf.
Junior golf has been solely focused on young players who come from the private schools and I have not heard of any junior golfer coming from the public school system.
Yet, I am pretty sure that our golf club caddies in our beloved City of Davao have young children, currently in the public school system, who can be given the chance to shine in DepEd-organized sports competitions.
Naa man gyud sigurado maayo ma develop nga golfer nga taga public school ba, wala pa lang gayud ma discover.
It is just an idea you know.
There may be more young golf gems to be discovered from the public school system.
There can be more David James just waiting to be discovered.
