From honing his skills at the sweatshop of Almendras Boxing Gym to fighting for world titles in foreign boxing rings, Jerwin Ancajas never failed to amaze people how powerful his punches are.
Images of Ancajas putting down Japanese challenger Teiru Kinoshita on bended knees in retaining his IBF Super Flyweight title last July 2 at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane will linger in the minds of boxing afficionads.
In a way, the Dabawenyo kid’s triumph softened the impact of Manny Pacquiao’s loss to Jeff Horn in the main event of the “Battl of Brisbane.”
Ancajas, who’s better known as Pretty Boy, is finally home and ready to meet his fans. He hails fromm Panabo City but started residing in Davao since he was 9 years old. From that time, he started spending most of his time in the Almendras Gym where he first held boxing gloves.
Who would have thought a Dabawenyo at the age of 25 is now considered a “superstar” in the boxing world.
It all started when he won the world title against McJoe Arroyo last September followed by his fight with Rodriguez which were both not aired in his hometown.
Pretty Boy is the first world champion under MP Promotions which made this life-changing event a dream come true for him now that he fought alongside with his “boss” and “idol” Manny Pacquiao.
Not everyone gets an opportunity like this, but Ancajas with the support of his parents managed to make this happen.
Ancajas continues to develop his footwork and boost up his power punches. He would even start training again after a two-week week rest to maintain his condition.
It was never easy for Ancajas as he went through a lot of struggles before his fight. But it was all made possible with the support of his coach Joven Jimenez and MP Promotions who were there helping him out.
His team will now be preparing for his possible upcoming fights after meeting up with Manny Pacquiao and Bob Arum.
With Ancajas’ strength, there’s more to see in the upcoming fights as he surely brought back the glory and excitement in Pinoy Boxing.
Ancajas retained his junior bantamweight world title for the second time as he impressively knocked out mandatory challenger Kinoshita with a right hook to the body in the seventh round.
Fighting in the co-feature of Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight world title defense against Jeff Horn, Ancajas made his mentor proud.
