Around 220 new batch of students will start work in various government offices in the province under the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES). This is a joint undertaking of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the provincial government of Comval with the objective of helping “poor but deserving students to pursue their education by providing income or augment their income through encouraging their employment during summer and/or Christmas vacations.”
For the 1st batch of SPES grantees, a total of 120 students start work at the different municipal government offices while those living in Nabunturan will also work at the provincial capitol and at the national government offices.
According to Senior Labor Officer Miles Atugan and SPES Coordinator Dinah Lynn Basco, this year, they will be paid with a salary of P340.00 per day as compared to last year’s P250.00 for 20 working days.
“Comval PLGU takes charge of the 60% or P204.00 and DOLE for the 40% or the P136. The SPES already had their orientation last April 5, 2017,” Atugan said.
For incoming Grade 12 student, Juneco Micarandayo of Matilo, Nabunturan, this is another opportunity for him to be included in this year’s grantees saying that just like last year, he will use the money to buy school supplies and other things needed for the school opening.
“Gamit kaayo ni sa akong pag-eskuwela labi na nga walay trabaho akong mama ug papa ug naga-depende ra mi sa ginagmayng abot sa among pananum,” he said.
Aside from helping the SPES grantees financially, the students also learned from their working experiences at the office such as courtesy on answering calls, basic customer service, delivering and receiving documents, among others. (Fe F. Maestre/IDS ComVal)
