Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio has directed Davao City Police Office Chief PSSUPT. Alexander Tagum to file appropriate charges against those responsible for the road mishap featuring a passenger van and a cargo truck in Bunawan district that led to the death of 10 people and serious injuries to nine others.

Police investigation showed that the Davao del Norte-bound van driven by one Joey Alcazaren had just overtaken another vehicle when it ran smack into a Davao City-bound cargo truck at around 5’oclock in the morning of Wednesday along K.M. 21 (near crossing Mahayag-Buhisan) the Davao-Agusan national highway.

Killed on the spot were Alcazaren; Richard Maley, helper of the van; Jonard Beldera, Mary May Misa, Jabey Monsales, Rosalinda Subingsubing, Domingo Carmona and other two unidentified van passengers while Reyvens Ravena was dead on arrival at the hospital.

“After investigation, it turned out na kolorum ang van. Na identify na ang owner on paper sa van and I told the City Director to file appropriate charges as necessary didto sa tag-iya sa van,” Duterte-Carpio told reporters on Wednesday.

The city mayor also said that she has instructed Tagum to sit down with agencies dealing with the operations of passenger vans like the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and the Land Transportation Office and others.

“It has to be the LTFRB kasi sila yung agency in charge of these franchises. Dapat meron silang record kung sino yung mga illegal (PUVs) at saan ang mga illegal terminals.”

The city mayor’s office committed to provide assistance to the victims as well as those currently being treated in the hospital.

In a separate statement, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte slammed LTO, LTFRB and CTTMO for failing to discipline public utility vehicles especially vans entering Davao City.

“Wa nako kabalo kung buta mo o bungol. Karon nga naa napod nangamatay mag atik atik napod mo og dakop. Mao di madakpan ni mga van kay naay under the table sa mga traffic officers. Yes that is an accusation because I have informants.”

At around 5’oclock in the morning of Wednesday, a passenger van from Compostela Valley collided with a truck bound to Davao del Norte in Bunawan District, Davao City.

Among the injured and are currently undergoing treatment at the Southern Philippines Medical Center are Juanito Burgos Labriga, the truck driver, Jarren Cabale, truck helper  Maryvie Castillo, John Philip Navaro Lara and Cristobal Custodio Anda. Four unidentified van passengers are currently in the intensive care unit.
