SHFC keen on housing for low-income groups

Social Housing Finance Corporation is eyeing to undertake community social housing projects to cater to the formal and informal sectors in the low-income bracket citizens of Davao City.

Former City Councilor, now SHFC Head Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling had his courtesy call with Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte on Tuesday to coordinate with the realization of this project.

“We have to collaborate with the city council because legislative actions, like crafting the policies, are needed. Let the city identify and we see if it’s prepared and then we fund it,” Cabling said.

He also said that the city will be the one to assess the land use and zoning basics of the applicant’s area if it is fit to be used as a residential lot or not.

Cabling stressed that the problem of informal communities in Davao City should be addressed more importantly because it is a progressive city.

“Sa tan-aw nako, kung paspas ang development, kinahanglan nato matutukan ang mga underprivileged kay sila mao ang apektado sa development—pirme mademolish, pirme ma dislocate.”

Cabling also divulged that during the previous administration under former president Benigno Aquino III, a 50 Billion-budget have been allocated for assistance to informal communities but does not include Visayas and Mindanao.

“Previously, sa NCR lang tanan. Karon, balanced na dapat. We have a lot of problems regarding informal communities here in Davao that should be addressed.”

Cabling said that for the present administration, SHFC is eyeing for social housing budget of at least one billion for Visayas and one billion for Mindanao.

In Davao City, the number of families that are informal settlers ranges for up to 50 to 100 thousand families.

SHFC is a subsidiary of National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation that offer social housing programs to cater to formal and informal sectors in the low-income bracket.
