Disaster Resilience

Earthquakes, floods, typhoons, fires and of late, volcanic eruption.

The Philippines had its share of calamities, one after another.

This brings to the realization that it is high time the government puts in place a separate department of cabinet level for a proactive response in times of disaster.

An agency tasked with ensuring everyone is ready for just about anything.

It’s Murphy’s Law everyone have to submit to. Indeed, if anything can happen, it will.

That mentality is what pushes
Senator Christopher Lawrence ‘Bong’ Go to push for a legislative solution to the problem.

The overachieving newbie Senator is now calling on his colleagues in the Senate to hasten the passage of the bill creating the Department of Disaster Resilience in the country. According to Sen. Bong, the Senate cannot afford to wait for another earthquake, volcanic eruption and typhoons before it will act.

The bill’s status is yet on the committee level, particularly the Committee  on National Defense and Security chaired by Sen. Panfilo Lacson.

The idea of creating an agency clothed with cabinet level existence and functionality is to keep it at par with other departments and can immediately act on the situation by coordinating with the different departments and offices for monitoring and action.

Given that the agency will be dealing with lives and property, there is no reason for Sen. Bong’s colleagues to defer or slacken.
