The “Day, Night, and in Between” exhibit opened last July 12 at the Art Portal Gallery of Contemporary Art. The group exhibit features works by Elenita Cruz Dumlao, Krishna Mie Zabate, Cherli Wen Ben Ybañez, Tanya Gaisano-Lee, Jeavyl Lañohan, Mary Anne Tan Guinoo, Trixie Borja Borbon, Maria Bach-Delos Santos, Miyen, Maru, and Nina Sta. Ana Custodio of Bai Hinang, an all-woman artists group.
Curator Laya Boquiren describes the range of art works in the exhibition as a way the artists convey personal narratives from filial ties, the experience of witnessing a loved one’s physical agony, resilience, and silent victories. They are women who assert the right to render the feminine on their own terms.
Artist and gallery-owner Alfred Galvez also notes that the all-woman exhibit allows the artists to express themselves without the typical gender roles a group exhibit with different create. Instead of being nubile, docile and disciplined bodies, the women are empowered to contend with the conundrum that each of them may face.
The “Day, Night, and in Between” exhibit is ongoing at the Art Portal at the Paseo de Legaspi complex and will last until the end of July.
