Malayan Colleges opens first classes

Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MCM), a Mapua school, located along MacArthur Highway in Matina, Davao City, formally opened its doors tosenior high and college students on Saturday, vowing to bring to Mindanao the world-class Mapuan education.

Reynaldo B. Vea, president and CEO of MCM said at the Marco Polo Hotel that Malayan under the Mapua brand has come to Davao City with the core vision of transforming students to become globally competitive professionals who are highly preferred by local industries and abroad.

“Davao City is a center of trade and commerce in Mindanao and likewise a booming business process outsourcing hub,” said Vea.

Vea said MCM offers high-quality education in the field of Engineering and Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Computer Studies, and Senior High School.

With 14 undergraduate programs, complete senior high school academic track, and a technical vocational livelihood track, MCM has already 400 pioneering students in college and 800 and counting for senior high school.

“The MCM admissions office had already reported a positive turn-out and receipt of enrollees, both for college and senior high school,” Vea added.

The MCM president said that the Malayan is different from the rest of the colleges and universities in Davao, and in Mindanao, “through its Learner-Centered Outcomes-Based Education, Blended on-line and face-to-face learning sessions, Industry Partnerships, Mindanao-centric Learning and Advanced Learning Facilities,”

He added that MCM, being a Mapua School, targets to bring in to Mindanao the type of quality education that Mapua is known for in their campuses in Manila and in Laguna.

Available undergraduate courses include Communication Arts, Multimedia Arts, Entrepreneurship, Entertainment and Multimedia Computing, Computer Science, Information Systems, Architecture, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

MCM will observe a trimester curriculum with an average of 15 to 18 units per term.

As for the Senior High School Academic Track, they offer the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM), General Academic Strand (GAS), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). They also offer two specializations for their Information and Communications Technology (ICT) technical-vocational-livelihood track: (1) Animation and Contact Center Services and the (2) Computer Programming and Contact Center Services.

Mapua is a non-sectarian institute for higher learning and a pioneer in technical education. With its first campus in Carriedo Street in Quiapo, Manila, it started out as a night school with 80 students enrolled in civil engineering and architecture. Today, it claims to be the biggest engineering school in the Philippines, with at least 15,000 students.
