Arts event assembles creative minds in sharing

A whole day of creative inputs and inspiration was shared during the Design South Creative Conference at the Malayan Colleges Mindanao on Saturday.

Some of the Philippines’ creative geniuses were present in the conference sharing their journey in the field of art.

According to Julliana Hellmuth, a member of Davao Graphic Designer Community (DGDC), the real goal of the event is to have a creative platform for local artists.

“We want people to know that instead of just admiring people from the international platform, we also have local artists that we should be highlighting instead,” Hellmuth said.

She added that there were approximately 300 participants not only coming from Davao City but in other parts of Mindanao and the Visayas like the cities of General Santos, Zamboanga, Tagum, Kidapawan, Koronadal, Cebu, Iloilo, and Iligan.

The participants were  students, graphic artists, illustrators, designers, art professionals and hobbyists.

The speakers were Pwek Kwong who talked about the Life of ‘Why?’ A Designer’s Search for Truth; Arthur Mercadar discussed his Journey in Animation;  Alfven Ato related the visual story telling through concept design for film and games; Nikko Bryle Tan talked about the MisFit Production Process; John Amor narrated  Lone Wolf: Surviving in the Coming Wilderness and Lei Melendres tackled the struggle of art.

Hellmuth added that the art community here in Davao City forms their own small groups and through Design South Conference these groups are brought together to participate and to learn more about their craft through the talk of the speakers.

She said that DGDC often creates art events such as this and designer’s meet-up to maintain the connection of the people involved in the art industry.

“We encourage people to join our group DGDC and like our page because we post announcement there (about future art events), in order to entice the local art community,” she said.

She said that the group looks forward for another Design South next year and hopes that there will be more participants.
