3 die in ComVal landslide, flood

The Compostela Valley Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Office (PDRRMO) has recorded three deaths due to the continuous rains brought about by the tail-end of the cold front since Saturday.

PDRRMO head Joseph Randy Loy identified the victims as Rommel Gogo, 28, Dennis Pesadilla and Krisel Hermosora, 12.

Loy said Gogo died due to a landslide caused by heavy rainfall in Barangay Tapia, Montevista at 3:17 p.m. of January 26.

At 4:29 p.m. of the same day, Pesadilla was also reported dead caused also by a landslide in Purok 24, Barangay Ngan in the town of Compostela. 

Loy said Hermosura went missing in the town of Nabunturan.

He said the 12-year-old from Purok 5, Sitio Handorumog in Barangay Bayabas was carried away by the strong current of Handorumog river around 12:00 noon Saturday and went missing for hours.

Loy said the grandmother attempted to rescue the girl but to no avail and she sustained wounds prompting barangay officials to rush her to a hospital.

But around 9:00 a.m. of January 27, Hermosura’s body was found by concerned citizens and barangay functionaries of Barangay Linda snagged in a tree branch in Sitio Fatima, Purok 6.


Meanwhile, a total of 1,095 families in the province were displaced from their homes due to the weather disturbance affecting the whole Davao Region.

The displaced families came from the eight towns in the provinces particularly Mawab, Monkayo, Laak, Nabunturan, Montevista, Compostela, New Bataan and Maco.

There was a series of landslides and flooding incidents were record in the affected towns in the province.

The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) also issued an order for a temporary Mining Stoppage on all Small Scale Miners in the entire Province.
