Officials of the upcoming Davao Region Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet 2019 are making sure participants, including the athletes and coaches, will not suffer from food poisoning like last year.
For one, all food handlers will undergo food safety training, prior to the regional athletic tournament.
Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) officer-in-charge Mikey Aportadera said on Monday’s flag raising ceremony that the office will ensure that the food poising incident of last year’s DAVRAA will not be repeated this year.
“We are trying to look into all aspects in order for the food poisoning not to happen again and we are very strict with regards to this matter,” Aportadera said.
Last year, 38 members of the delegation from Mati City in Davao Oriental were hospitalized due to suspected “food poisoning” on the eve of the DAVRAA meet.
Curtis C. Lazarraga of the City Health Office (CHO) said that food handlers from all 11 delegations of DAVRAA will undergo a one-week food safety training, from January 14 to 20, to be conducted by the CHO Environment and Sanitation Division.
“We insisted that all food handlers should undergo food protocol training, to ensure that all foods prepared during DAVRAA will be safe,” Aportadera said that Davao City, the host for this year’s DAVRAA, is 80-percent ready for the big regional sports tournament.
He said that an estimated 7,000 athletes from the whole Davao region will be flocking to the city starting next week, as the event will kick off from January 27 and end on February 2.
Aportadera said that most of the sports activities will be held at the
newly-built 20-hectare University of the Philippines – Mindanao (UP-
Min) Sports Complex in Barangay Mintal, Davao City.
“Facilities such as the multi-purpose gym, the stadium, and the
swimming pool will be used this upcoming DAVRAA,” he said.
