Mindanao youths who have potentials of becoming top athletes will have more chances of being recruited and trained to be future champions in their chosen field of sports with the completion of the University of the Philippines-Mindanao inside UP-Min’s campus in Bago Oshiro, Tugbok District in Davao City.
This in effect was the statement of University of the Philippines
President Danilo L. Concepcion who said that with the facility being in operation, outstanding athletes from the Davao Region and elsewhere in Mindanao of being easily discovered and recruited for rigid training.
“We observed that very few athletes are being recruited from Mindanao, maybe because there are not many sports facilities in Mindanao where the students of Mindanao can train in,” Concepcion said.
He said the UP system will strengthen the training programs using scientific ways in developing athletes.
Concepcion said the university expects that soon many athletes from Mindanao will be part of their success in the field of sports.
He bared that the university is planning to establish a College of Human Kinetics in UP Mindanao for better understanding and scientific approach in sports.
He said he thanked the city government for the support given to UP Mindanao through the sports complex so that many young people from the island region will engage in sports.
Concepcion said that the establishment of the sports complex inside their campus is the first collaboration being done by UP with local government.
Concepcion and Mayor Sara Z. Duterte on Wednesday led the signing of a memorandum of agreement between UP and the city government for the management of the sports complex.
Duterte said the city is currently providing 26 personnel like utility people, security and technical persons who are paid under the city but they are under the supervision of UP Mindanao.
The mayor also said the sports complex is ready to be used for the Palarong Pambansa this coming April as the city will host this big national sporting event.
