The 2019 Torotot Festival was declared successful by Phoenix Petroleum, organizer of this yearly celebration staged in Davao City every New Year’s Eve in support of the city government of Davao’s advocacy of celebrating the New Year in a safe, cost-efficient, and enjoyable manner.
“It was a very successful event; the audience compared to last year was twice bigger,” said Ben Sur, corporate affairs manager at Phoenix Petroleum.
The Torotot Festival was held at Rizal Park, participated in by individuals and groups from Davao City and neighboring areas.
Sur said the competitions namely Giant Torotot, Torotot-Inspired Costume, and dance contests were also well-participated.
“Acting Mayor Sebastian Duterte stayed with us and drew a lot of raffle prizes during the event and Colonel Angel Sumagaysay of Public Safety Command was also present until the countdown and joined the big crowd in cheering and blowing their torotot (plastic horns) to welcome the New Year,” Sur added.
The holding of the yearly Torotot Fest is Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc.’s way of supporting the Pasko Fiesta sa Davao 2019.
The festival aims to promote a safe Yuletide celebration by discouraging the use of fireworks and firecrackers.
Then mayor now President Rodrigo Duterte implemented a strict observance of the ban on firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices 17 years ago aiming to show the entire country that being safe doesn’t mean a boring New Year event.
