Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio disclosed that the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that current conditions and model forecasts show there is more than fifty percent chance that a weak La Niña will develop either late October or November 2020, which may last through the first quarter of 2021.

“Dugay nata ga-monitor kung duna ba’y La Niña muabot sa atoa this year. Ang atoang PAGASA duna na sila’y statement na it is good to prepare para sa La Niña season or cycle nga mahitabo in the last quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 that would mean  October 2020 hangtod March 2021,” she said on Friday via Davao City Disaster Radio (DCDR) 87.5.

The mayor advised Dabawenyos, especially those living in landslide and flood prone areas to prepare their important belongings and “Go Bags” in case of an evacuation as more rains could be experienced during La Niña.

“Pag muingon ta ug La Niña usually frequent ug kusog na pag-ulan so kinahanglan ang atoang mga kaigsoonang Dabawenyo paniguruhon nato nga wala ta nagpuyo sa landslide area and kung kita nagpuyo sa isa ka flood prone area, we make sure i-secure nato ang atoang mga gamit. If there is any possibility nga mubalhin ta sa dili flood prone area, let us take that opportunity nga makabalhin dayon. Kung kita dili makabalhin naa ta sa flood prone area i-andam nato ang atoang mga gamit para sa mga pagbaha ug mag-andam ta ug “Go Bag”,” she said.

A “Go Bag” functions as a portable kit which is meant to help an individual or a family survive the next 72 hours after they evacuate their homes in case of a storm, an earthquake, and other kinds of disasters.

“Importante ang Go Bag ug evacuation plan. Ug maminaw ta pirmi sa atoang Davao City Reduction and Management Office with regards to the water levels sa atoang kasapaan,” the mayor said.
