Department of Education 11 (DepEd 11) spokesperson Jenielito “Dodong” Atillo on Wednesday underscored that reverting the school year calendar to the pre-pandemic schedule underwent extensive consultations with the teachers, learners, private sector, and stakeholders.
“We have conducted extensive consultations with the teachers, learners, stakeholders even the private sector and they are one in saying that we have to revert to the pre-pandemic schedules,” Atillo said during the AFP PNP Press Corps media briefing at The Royal Mandaya Hotel.
Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte signed DepEd Order No. 3, series of 2024, on February 19, 2024, amending the School year 2023-2024 calendar, which adjusted the end of the school year (EOSY) to May 31, 2024.
This is in line with the commitment of DepEd articulated in the MATATAG agenda to “take good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment”.
To ensure that this commitment is fulfilled, DepEd recognizes the clamor to gradually revert the school calendar to the pre-pandemic opening of classes, alongside the resounding consensus from extensive consultations with teachers, learners, and relevant stakeholders.
“The Department of Education would like to confirm that we are reverting to the old schedule. We will be going back to the June opening. Our recognitions, graduations, and moving up ceremonies will have to be conducted before May 29 to 31, 2024,” Atillo said.
However, under exemptional circumstances, the schools may conduct the EOSY rites on June 1, 2024, Saturday, only upon consultation with teachers and parents.
The Brigada Eskwela shall be conducted from July 22, Monday to July 27, 2024, Saturday.
The SY 2024-2025 shall start on July 29, 2024, Monday and end on May 16, 2025, Friday.
