The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban) on Monday said the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte is the clearest manifestation of dirty politics in the country, an affront to the sovereign will of the Filipino people, and reckless abuse of power.
The PDP Laban expressed in a statement its extreme disgust and condemnation over the “railroaded and sham impeachment by the House of Representatives.”
“Who less than halfway into a six-year term where she received 32.2 million votes, the most votes cast for a candidate in the history of the Philippines,” the party said.
PDP Laban underscored that the obvious railroading of the impeachment against the vice president was executed with precision by desperate members of the House to distract from the worsening situation of the country.
“Through this railroaded impeachment complaint, they wish to sweep under the rug the unprecedented scandals that have enraged the public. They also wish to destroy the chances of VP Sara Duterte in seeking a higher office in 2028,” it said.
The group reminded that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. himself had told the House to halt the impeachment complaint and address the problems facing ordinary Filipinos.
“Why not address the growing discontent and frustration across the country resulting from the worsening peace and order, graft and corruption, and poverty? As the election draws near, PDP Laban urges all Filipino voters to choose wisely who they will vote for, especially in the Senate where the fate of VP Sara will be decided. At the end of the day, impeachment is a numbers game, and the more allies she has in the Senate, the better for our country,” PDP Laban stated.
Meanwhile, supporters of the vice president in Davao City gathered for an indignation rally and candle-lighting ceremony at the Freedom Park on Roxas Avenue, on Sunday evening.
Various groups expressed their objections to the impeachment complaint against Duterte.
They also aired the issues that the Marcos administration should be dealing with including corruption, high prices for commodities, high crime rate, proliferation of illegal drugs, and more.
Last Friday, the vice president brushed off the impeachment complaint against her saying she had been preparing for the impeachment since House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers party-list Representative France Castro mooted the matter last year.
The fourth impeachment complaint against the vice president was approved by the House on the last day of its session before recess on Wednesday wherein a total of 215 lawmakers signed the petition, which was filed the same day, surpassing even two-thirds of the lower chamber’s 306 members.
The articles of impeachment were then sent to the Senate on the same day, however, the body has adjourned until June 2, 2025.
