Edge Davao has named long-time Managing Editor Neilwin Bravo as its new Editor-In-Chief.
Bravo will succeed the late Antonio M. Ajero who passed away last July 17, 2022.
“We are proud to announce that Neil Bravo has accepted the responsibility to head our editorial team. We are hopeful that with his dedication, creativity and style, Edge Davao will continue to thrive excellently in this digitally-challenged newspaper industry,” Edge Davao General Manager Olivia Velasco said.
In formally assuming the post as Editor-In-Chief, Bravo said it’s a huge challenge to fill the void left by the late Ajero and to ride the tide of an evolving communications landscape.
“It’s time to take on the challenge besetting our industry as we are continually bombarded with the threats of extinction in this age of digital and social media,” Bravo said. “Creativity is key and visuals is the future.”
Bravo started with Edge Davao in 2013 when the paper began daily publications from its weekly business format. He came in as Sports Editor and shared desk operations with Ajero, former Associate Editor Greg Deligero and the late Ram Maxey. He was elevated to Managing Editor in 2015.
A graduate of Ateneo de Davao University, he was Editor-In-Chief of the Atenews in college before starting his journalism career as a 20-year old stringer of the Media Mindanao News Service (MMNS). He joined the defunct Daily San Pedro Express in 1994 as its Sports Editor and Editor of its weekly Madayaw Business Magazine. He moved to the Mindanao Daily Mirror in 1995 as Assistant Sports Editor and later became its Weekend Editor. While with the Mindanao Daily Mirror, he wrote for Malaya as its provincial correspondent.
He left the media scene in 2000 and joined the government service working as Provincial Information Officer for Davao Oriental from 2001-2006 and with Davao del Norte from 2006-2008. He left government service to finish his Bachelor of Laws with the University of Mindanao and earning his Juris Doctor diploma.
In 2016, he moved to Perth, Australia but continued to work his daily editorial functions “remotely and digitally.”
Bravo was responsible for the revolutionary visually-driven changes in the design and layout of Edge Davao.
