The city government distributed 85 breeding cattle to selected farmers in Paquibato District in line with the Community-Based Livestock Production Project under the City Veterinarian’s Office.
Assistant City Veterinarian Dr. Esther Cherrie Rayos said the dispersal of male and female cattle was part of the livestock restocking program, which is intended to help farmers augment their income and address their nutritional needs.
Rayos said it was also important to infuse new and young breed of cattle to prevent in-breeding that can cause genetic problems, prevent animal depletion, and to promote quality cattle meat production.
The distribution began on May 23 and was completed last June 20.
The city government has allocated P7.25 million for the project, which also included a training component for the recipients; and purchase of animal supplies and medicines, vitamins and de- wormers .
Rayos said the cattle will be jointly taken care of by the recipients , who formed themselves into an association.
This, she said, would ensure that the animals, especially the mother and young cows, are well taken care of. CIO
