The Department of Science and Technology in Region XI announced the winners for the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) held July 3-5 at the NCCC Mall that gathered under one roof the cream of this region’s inventors, innovators and creative thinkers.
The RICE opened up with the theme “Invention & Innovation for People”.
This year’s RICE was organized as a part of the National Science and Technology Week Celebration with the theme “Science for People”.
RICE is an event that is open for both to public and private sectors inventors and researchers within the region and is a regional qualifying competition for the National Invention Contest Exhibits that happens every two years.
According to Arnel Rodriguez, Senior Science Research Specialist of DOST, RICE aimed to give an avenue for inventors, innovators, creative thinkers and creative researchers throughout the country. This is the kind of competition that would help them test and showcase the capability of their inventions.
There are six categories in this competition namely: Invention (Tuklas Awards), Utility Model, Industrial Design, Creative Research ( Likha Award),Student Creative Research (Sibol Award) for High school and college. This year, the DOST Region XI added a new category, The Student Creative research (Butil Award) for elementary students which aims to encourage young minds to create innovative researches and models. However, only the students from region XI are allowed to compete.
The judges for this year’s RICE are Engr. Roderick S. Dayot, Dr. Emma Ruth V. Bayogan and Dr. Richar T. Mata.
The criteria in determining the winners for the Sibol Award (Outstanding Student Creative Research) included originality, creativity, market potential and presentation while the criteria in the Likha Award revolved around originality, creativity, market potential and presentation
