About 1,500 personnel of the City Government of Davao conducted a tree-planting activity at the Davao River bank — near the Bolton Bridge on Quimpo Boulevard — on Saturday.
Engr. Marivic Reyes, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer-in-Charge, said the tree planting activity was in connection with the celebration of the Environment month.
“As a way to celebrate the environment’s month, we initiated the tree planting activity to remind the people that we need to take care of our environment,” she said.
The participating employees had planted over 2,600 mangrove, bamboo and malubago seedlings during the activity.
Reyes said that the participating employees came from the 45 offices of the city government.
A number of parolees also joined the activity that started at 6:30 a.m.
Reyes said the city government chose the Bolton bridge area because of Davao City’s existing river bank protection program.
“This activity is important to help the environment. We have to plant trees to rehabilitate those flood prone areas and prevent soil erosion. We need to make a stand for our environment,” she added.
Reyes said the planted trees will be monitored daily by CENRO to ensure that these grow well.
The protection and conservation of the environment are among the top 10 priority agenda of Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte. CIO
