It has been almost a year since Hedcor, a Cleanergy arm of AboitizPower, launched the No PETs allowed campaign.
Under this campaign, the use and purchase of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles are prohibited within office and plant premises as well as during company activities. Hedcor even distributed tumblers to its team members to ensure that the organization completely eliminates the use of PET bottles. Today, the use of PET bottle has largely decreased among Hedcor team.
Hedcor’s President and COO, Carlos Aboitiz, articulated the “why” behind the campaign. “The Hedcor team believes that we are stewards of the environment and the well-being of future generations and that this responsibility does end at our renewable energy production lines. Our effort to eliminate PET bottles from our work life is a commitment to extend this role as stewards to all facets of our life in the office and, hopefully, to our lives outside of the office as well.”
This success prompted Hedcor’s Environmental Management team to push their campaign further, thus adapting the “Break Up with Single-use Plastics” initiative which is now gaining support globally. Anchored on the message “if you can’t reuse it, refuse it,” the campaign aims to minimize and eventually eliminate the use and purchase of single-use plastics within the company.
“Prohibiting the use of PET bottles is just our first step to materialize our campaign. Among others, we also encourage each team member to switch to eco-bags, bring reusable lunch bags and containers, and to patronize package-free products,” said Corporate and Regulatory Vice President, Darlene Arguelles as she further highlights the campaign’s initiatives.
Hedcor has been actively involved in environmental and sustainability initiatives in line with its promise of delivering power reliably, responsibly, and at a reasonable cost. As a renewable energy company, Hedcor runs its business while taking care of the environment.
In fact, Hedcor has planted more than 300,000 seedlings through their tree planting activities in the year 2018. Among other initiatives, Hedcor also holds an Eco-market Day in far-flung barangays to encourage residents to follow proper waste management and, at the same time, earn from selling their recyclable materials.
Hedcor operates 21 run-of-river hydropower facilities in the country with a total installed capacity of 258 MWs.
