Fashion leaders and sustainability advocates in Davao City will be joining the global campaign that calls for thoughtful reforms of fashion’s impact on the environment and people.This will take form in a weekend event organized by the Global Shapers Davao Hub, a network of young leaders initiated by the World Economic Forum.
Happening on April 27-28, 2019, Unstitch: A Fashion and Sustainability Fair, will unravel the social realities of clothing in line with the Fashion Revolution Week observances happening simultaneously around the world.
The event will feature various interactions: from a popup shop featuring homegrown sustainable fashion brands, to inspiring workshops, talks, and socials.All activities have the intention to raise public awareness on the key issues that make up the relationship of fashion and sustainability: climate change, water stress, pollution, biodiversity, natural resources, modern day slavery, and wellbeing.
“Through this event, we hope to invite people to reimagine fashion as a force for good,” said Yana Santiago, Unstitch project co-head. “Fashion Revolution invites us to rethink fashion–to love our clothes more, to become wiser consumers, and to be mindful of how our daily fashion choices (buying, wearing, washing, disposing, etc) make an impact on the planet as a whole.”
Unstitch is a Southeast Asia event of Shaping Fashion, a global initiative that scales efforts on sustainable fashion through the Global Shapers network around the world.Unstitch is an official Design Week Philippines event. Global Shapers Davao Hub’s Jesse Boga Madriaga will introduce Fashion Revolution, a movement that believes in fashion that values people, planet, creativity, and profit in equal measure. PWC Davao Program Chair for Fashion Design and Industrial Design Emi Englis will talk about Nurturing Davao’s Creative Communities. Young Davao fashion designer Maizy Colleen will do a demo on Fashion Haulternative, a way of refreshing your wardrobe without buying new clothes.
Clothing and Community: Artisan StorytellingApril 27, 1 PM at the Philippine Women’s College (PWC) Davao
Artisans, and designers are the heart of an ethical fashion industry. In this storytelling session, the spotlight is trained on Mindanao’s fashion makers:-Sesotunawa, a community of artisans and cultural workers who bring together the culture, arts, and stories of the Tbolis of Lake Sebu.-Ainie Ampatuan, a “modest fashion” designer who celebrates her culture by incorporating Maguindanao’s traditional woven cloth Inaul in every fashion piece.

Mode de Papier: Paperbead-Making WorkshopApril 28, 1 PM at the Philippine Women’s College (PWC) DavaoLearn how to make paper beads out of old magazines. Every year, magazine companies generate waste and the cumulative impact of these can be substantial, affecting air, water, and land.
Promark, Inc., collaborated with the Davao Hub to start a different conversation on waste management. This workshop aims to create awareness and inspire creativity by upcycling magazines into beads. The session is led by Toril Kalambuan Association’s Elena Mabano, who leads livelihood programs through craftwork.
Green Wardrobe: Sustainable Fashion ForumApril 28, 4 PM at the Philippine Women’s College (PWC) Davao
Leaders and advocates will convene to change the conversation about fashion in this forum which will bring academic and industry knowledge to the public through inspiring talks and discussions by-Pamela Mejia – UN Environment Programme awardee and founder of Phinix, a recycling company that creates solutions for textile wastes and helps local artisans and the PWD community. She also trains aspiring and current fashion social entrepreneurs.-Celia Elumba – DOST Philippines Textile Research Institute (PTRI) executive director. She will bring in decades of extensive experience in the field of apparel and textile industry having worked in global companies.-EJ Isada Mariano – Creative Director and Co-Founder of AKABA, a world-class Filipino brand with cultural heritage at its very core. AKABA bridges cultural heritage with urban sensibilities by understanding the values and experiences shared by weavers and customers.-Denise Dilig – alumna of the Philippine Women’s College (PWC) Davao Fashion Design Program. She talk about her thesis on the creative use of banana fiber and pina fabrics.
