The local government of Davao is now gearing up to revive the “Torotot Festival” in New Year’s Eve this year, as Phoenix Petroleum Philippines will sponsor the said festivity.
Ben Sur, Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. corporate affairs manager said Torotot Festival is one way of supporting LGU-Davao’s advocacy of zero-casualty and zero firework related injuries during the celebration of New Year.
Firecrackers and fireworks are banned in Davao City since 2002, a rule that is strictly enforced by local law enforcement units.
Sur said that it will be the first sponsorship of their company and they will ensure Dabawenyos that this year’s Torotot Festival bigger than before.
This year’s festivity will be grander as three new components added to spice up the celebration on December 31.
Sur said the three components are the Giant Torotot competition, the Torotot-inspired costume competition and the Torotot group dance competition.
Sur said that all competitions are open for all barangays in the city. The deadline for submission of entries will be on Dec. 20 at 4 p.m.
The prizes to be awarded are the following: P50, 000 for the1st place , P30, 000 for 2nd place, P10,000 for third place and P5,000 as consolation prize.
Meanwhile, Dan Salvaño, Torotot festival director, said “We need to revive the festival because we did not have this last year, we don’t want people think that this festival no longer existing.”
He added that Dabawenyos can still enjoy and have fun even without firecrackers.
