US official arrives in Davao City, eyes ways to elevate US-Philippines ties

U.S. Department of State Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Global Public Affairs Kristin Kane

Department of State Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Kristin Kane of the United States blew into town in Davao City on Thursday as part of her three-day visit to the Philippines.

The US official is in the Philippines to familiarize herself with the country and understand how to elevate U.S.-Philippine ties.

“I’m here visiting the Philippines from Washington D.C. to underscore the strong relationship between the US and the Philippines and the Filipino people and we wanted to make sure to get outside of the capital city to come here to Davao City and to get to know the issues and the people here and in Mindanao,” Kane told Edge Davao.

Kane said her visit underscores the people-to-people relationship and the respect and friendship the US has with the Filipino people particularly in Davao City.

Kane works in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Global Public Affairs, which oversees programs that engage foreign publics and media to enhance their understanding of the values and policies of the United States.

As part of her visit to Davao City, Kane also met with some of the women journalists in Davao City and discussed the state of community journalism and the efforts to sustain it.
