CENRO plants more than 2k mangroves

As part of the city government’s initiative to support environmental conservation, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) on January 24 planted more than 2,000 mangroves along the coastline of Barangay Talomo Proper in Talomo District.

Christopher Asibal, CENRO’s Development Management Officer, said the initiative was aimed at raising awareness and active participation of local government offices in conserving the coastal ecosystems of Davao City.

“Kay double ang purpose niini, magwapo ang atoang environment, [unya] presko ang atoang palibot unya naa po’y mu-capture sa carbon sa city (It serves two purposes: first, it will beautify our surround and keep them fresh; and it will absorb carbon in the city),” he said.

He said the activity was in line with Mayor Sebastian Duterte’s desire to plant trees and green the coastal areas. The initiative started in 2023.

“Naumpisahan na ni siya mga two years ago. Nagsugod ta didto sa may Talomo side kanang along the road lang gihapon padulong ni ngadto na sa District 2 sa may Agdao District (It started about two years ago, we started [planting] on the Talomo side, along the road heading towards District 2 in the Agdao District),” he said.

“Humanon jud ni siya kay usa man pod ni siya ang muhatag og carbon sink sa Davao City (We will complete this because it will be one of the things that will give Davao City a carbon sink),” he added.

He said the project also seeks to obtain carbon credits, a strategy for lowering greenhouse gas emissions, while simultaneously obtaining backing and financing from other countries.

He said the CENRO will continue to conduct mangrove tree planting every month this year. CIO
