She was the toast of the track in last year’s Palarong Pambansa. But 3,000-meter record holder Mea Gey Adialiaan S, Niñura feels she is challenged at the top.
The long distance ace from Davao del Sur is set to defend her title for this year’s Palarong Pambansa 2017 which will be held in the province of Antique.
But she is not looking ahead.
On Monday, she fell short of resetting her own Palaro record during the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet held at Mati City Centennial Sports Complex in Mati City.
In an interview with EDGE Davao, Niñura said although she won the gold medal in this year’s DAVRAA meet, she is not at all happy with her performance.
Niñura clocked 11 minutes 6.36 seconds–a far cry from her 10:03:43 Palarong Pambansa mark set in Legaspi, Albay.
“Sa akong performance karon, dili ko maka-ingon na happy ko karon o successful ang akong dula, kay sa time pa lang daan sir, wala jud nako nakuha ang akong record sa Palaro(I could not say that I am happy with my performance because based on my time, I did not even get the same time of my Palaro record),” she said.
She said that after the DAVRAA 2017, she will practice hard because her record could not compete in this year’s Palarong Pambansa.
“Even if I am the record breaker of the said event, it doesn’t mean that I need to be complacent because I hold the record,” she said.
“Now that I see what is lacking on my performance, I really need to prepare myself and practice hard so that I can compete well in the Palarong Pambansa,” Niñura added.
Niñura said that she targets break her own record and make history in the field of 3000-meter run in the country.
The 17-year-old pride of Barangay Kapatagan in Digos City, Davao del Sur broke the record in last year’s Palarong Pambansa in Legaspi, Albay eclipsing the 10:10:16 minutesrecord of Jie Ann Calis from Northern Mindanao.
Calis’ record was set in the 2015 Palarong Pambansa held at Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City.
After Niñura broke the record last year, six universities in the country and two universities from the United States of America offered her scholarship.
