Davao City’s museum will finally get a permanent home at last with the approval of MayorInday Sara Duterte-Carpioto transfer MuseoDabawenyo, presently located at A. Pichon Street to Palma Street, to the premises of People’s Park.
This was revealed on Tuesday at the regular council session on Tuesday by Councilor Pilar C. Braga in her privilege speech, saying that the mayor has given her imprimatur for the transfer of the museum to People’s Park after a thorough study and research.
She also presented the proposed building perspective which is a durian-inspired design done by City Architect Clyde Eric Verga.
The current museum building was formerly the Court of First Instance which was restored and rehabilitated to house and to showcase the rich history and diverse culture of Davao City. It first opened to the public during the 71stArawngDabawopening ceremony on March 14, 2008.
The museum will be located in a 1,000 square-meter lot inside People’s Park.
“If plans don’t miscarry, the construction will start later this year,” said Braga.
The cost of the building of the new modernized MuseoDabawenyo is 100 million pesos, which was sourced out from the Office of the President.
The MuseoDabawenyo Advisory Board found that the area in People’s Park is ideal for the museum since those who will have field trips can have bigger parking spaces, in contrary to its current location in Pichon St. which is smaller and has heavy traffic during rush hours. The museum will also become more accessible if it will be located in People’s Park.
On May, the city council approved ordinance 0266-06/02966-06 entitled “An ordinance establishing the MuseoDabawenyo, providing for its permanent home and other purposes.”
