Davao City is still short of 20,000,000 birds to boost its poultry production and to cope with consumption demand.
“The production (of chicken) here in Davao City is 32 million but I think the consumption here is higher than 30 million a year, “ lawyer Lailane dela Victoria, president of the Davao Poultry and Egg Producers told the Kapihan sa Dabaw on Monday.
She said the current demand of poultry product in the city as of today is about 40 million birds a year.
“There will also be a deficit not only in the production of broilers but also in the breeder farms,” said Victoria. The reason behind the shortage is that big companies are exporting the bulk of their broiler chicken.
The other reason is that majority of companies in Luzon are getting their day old chicks here in Davao City. The increase of population is also seen as a reason because this means there will be an increase in the demand of poultry products which will result in the increase of the shortage.
One implication of this shortage are the low availability of poultry during class opening and Christmas season.
Victoria said an additional of five to 10 million chickens a year are needed to satisfy the demand.
The Davao Agri Trade Expo (DATE) 2017 will have in the Davao Poultry and Egg Producers Association in the event on September 21-23, 2017. The conference will discuss how to increase the production of poultry in Davao Region to address the deficit of poultry production.
The organizers said that with this exposure they are hoping to encourage people to invest in the poultry industry.
They are also inviting the people who are yet to be a part of their association for them to have an access in the available remedies and technologies to improve their business. Aside from that, they wanted to increase the knowledge of the people in this industry to prevent them from committing mistakes that can be avoided. Their association is formed to solve the issues that they are facing now such as the odor and flies issues.
The association boasts of big growers who have tunnel ventilated poultry farms that can house 200,00 to 300,000 chickens as well as small growers with 10,00 to 50,000 bird capacity. They are also considered as the conventional type.
