The City Agriculture Office has confirmed that cornfields in the districts of Toril, Paquibato, Calinan and Marilog are affected by the dry spell happening in the country.
Brian Leuterio, acting city agriculturist said they have submitted a data to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to do immediate confirmation.
However, he clarified that the data right now does not warrant the declaration of a state of calamity in the affected areas.
“Definitely, there is a felt dry spell, but the city is not directly hit,” Leuterio said.
He said the drought is felt more in the provinces of Davao del Sur and Bukidnon.
Leuterio said the local government along with the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has assured the availability of drought resistant seeds, fertilizers and fingerlings.
He said their office is constantly monitoring the situation.
“The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation is also on field to give assistance through the farmers’ organizations providing yellow corn seeds with fertilizers,” Leuterio said.
He said for Davao City alone, they have provided a total of 2,000 bags of seedlings.
Leuterio said the farmers are ready to plant when the weather normalizes by July, the projected month when the drought will be finally over. (PIA 11-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
