25 September, Davao City: Opening today at Ateneo de Davao University is an exhibit of paintings by Argentine brother Edgardo Hugo Campos of the Brothers of the Holy Family.
Paintings depict icons, such as Mary Mother of God, Joseph, and Jesus as an infant, as a child, as Lord of the Universe, among others.
Biblical scenes include the Nativity, the Way of the Cross, and the Resurrection.
The paintings hew to Byzantine and Romanesque styles, but the artist incorporates Mindanao’s fruits of the land, animals, and more importantly, indigenous peoples, in his art.
“In my work, I render homage to the rich culture of Mindanao,” Bro. Campos says. Apart from acrylic and tempera on wood, Campos also uses tile, stone, glass in the mosaics he has been creating for 17 years.
Campos has been transforming the churches and chapels in Davao with his brilliant colors and bold textures since he arrived in Davao City in 2001. He redesigned the interiors of Mary Mediatrix of All Grace in Digos City and the Immaculate Conception Parish in Mintal, Davao City, among others.
Ateneo de Davao is co-presenting this exhibit with the Embassy of Argentina in Manila in celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between Argentina and the Philippines and 70 years of Ateneo de Davao as a Catholic, Filipino, and Jesuit university.
The exhibit is open to the public from 25 September to 25 October 2018 at the Miguel Pro Learning Commons, 2/F Community Center of the First Companions, the blue building along Roxas Avenue.
