Every 2nd of February, France celebrates La Chandeleur or “The Day of Crêpes”.
Not only is the holiday celebrated by eating a lot of crêpes, but the French also do a bit of fortune telling while making them. It is traditional to hold a coin in your writing hand and a crêpe pan in the other, and flip the crêpe into the air. If you manage to catch the crêpe in the pan, your family will be prosperous for the rest of the year.
What is La Chandeleur?
It’s a religious holiday in France that nowadays sees a lot of people eating a lot of crêpes.
Why crêpes?
Well there’s a lot of history to this day, it was a good way to use up the extra wheat ahead of the new harvest. And symbolically, it looks like a sun, so it was a reason to rejoice as the days started to get longer.
But that’s just about it if you are in France.
